Learning Centers

Part of our Guided Reading includes using Daily Five activities.  Below, Abigail is Working on Writing.  This activity includes writing sentences, cutting them apart, and putting them back together again.  Each student then reads the sentence to a teacher.

Above, Eduardo is working on Word Work.  He is pulling out Sight Words and writing them on paper.  If students can read the Sight Word on the stick, he or she can write it, if not it goes back into the bucket.

Sight Words, Sight Words, Sight Words

The second half of Sight Words level 1 are going home this week.  All students will be working on these words at school and nightly practice will help with the memorizing of these tricky words.

Homework

Your child will be taking home a reading book every night.  Please allow a few minutes each night for your child to read to you.  They will also have a cut up sentence that they have practiced during the day as well.  At first this might seem like a challenge, but please stick with it and encourage your child.  Things will get better, I guarantee it!  Return the book each day in the colorful bag that has been provided for your child.

I have sent home Sight Words Level 1 for all students to practice.  Each student has a little pocket folder to help with learning.  One side is labeled "Words I Know" and the other is labeled "Words I Almost Know".  These are tricky words, but once your child gets the hang of it, things will get easier and mastery will take over.

Question-What if my child doesn't finish the book?
Answer-Return the book.  Chances are they will want to finish the book, and he or she will have the opportunity to check it out again at a later date.

Remember to return all books.  There is a five dollar replacement fee for books that have been lost or damaged.

Lower-Case Letter Formation

Kindergarten kiddos love to practice writing letters, some have the correct letter formation down, while others have found ways to make letters look correct while using the wrong formation.   If you're a parent who isn't sure of the correct letter formation, or if your not sure your child is using the correct letter formation, than this is for you.  So far we have been working on the letters-t,b,f,m,n,i,u,o and c.  Next week we will be working on the letters-a and g.

Click on the link below, and then download the Lower-Case Letter Formation Guides.  Currently we are working on lower case letters.

Sight Words Level 1

Students have been practicing Sight Words in their Guided Reading books as well as in isolation. Below are the following words from Sight Word level 1.

I           like         to         the         my         is        see        no        you
and      said         go        look       a            A        run        this      red

These are words each student will need to know.  The words have been sent home in a mini folder pocket labeled Sight Words.  Each side of the inside pocket is labeled, Words I Know and Words I Almost Know.  Use this as a tool to practice Sight Words, and learning will turn into a game for the entire family.
